Monitoring your employees might seem invasive to you, but in today’s
legal climate it is not only acceptable, but absolutely necessary.
Companies are responsible for providing a positive workplace
environment devoid of harassment.
Some workers may send inappropriate emails and IMs to a fellow
coworker in hopes of starting an office romance, or just to be funny.
Sometimes the person on the other end feels intimidated and upset, or
sometimes messages can make their way to someone in the office that
does not find it funny, but degrading, and the office managers and
CEOs find themselves in the middle of this dilemma. This can lead, and
has lead, to a sexual harassment lawsuit. In fact, both Microsoft and
Chevron had to each settle sexual-harassment lawsuits worth over $2
million each due to inappropriate emails circulating around their
organizations.
